Barbara Gordon / Batgirl was intended to debut in the DCEU at an earlier time. She was planned to feature as a supporting character in Ben Affleck's iteration of The Batman prior to Matt Reeves assuming the director position from Affleck and discarding the script he co-wrote with Geoff Johns in favor of focusing on a younger Bruce Wayne / Batman and subsequently removing the film's ties to the DCEU.[4]
According to Zack Snyder, he conceived of plans for the character to step in after James Gordon's retirement, serving as Gotham's protector in the wake of Batman's mortal sacrifice. She would then occupy the role until Superman and Lois Lane's son took on the mantle of Batman by which point Barbara would then serve as his mentor.[5]
Zack Snyder's initial storyboards for the second Justice League sequel included a 20-year flash forward to the memorial of Batman's death. There Barbara (who is revealed to be the current Commissioner of Gotham City) would be seen speaking to Lois Lane, asking her when Lois would reveal the truth about her son's true parentage (that of being Bruce Wayne's son).[6]
Just days prior to the announcement of Leslie Grace having landed the role in the Batgirl cancelled movie, it was reported that actresses such as Isabela Merced, Zoey Deutch, and possibly Haley Lu Richardson were expected to test for the role alongside Leslie Grace.[7]
On August 11, 2022, it was reported by Variety that the newly-appointed heads of Warner Brothers were entertaining the possibility of either having Leslie Grace reprise the role of Batgirl in another production or simply star in another role for another Warner Brothers project.[8]
