Ricou was the ruler of the Fishermen Kingdom, the husband of Rina and the father of Scales. He was killed by Orm Marius when he had refused to join his cause, allowing Orm to threaten and force Scales to join him.
Biography[]
Ruler of the Fishermen Kingdom[]
Ricou is the ruler of the Fishermen Kingdom, one of the seven successor kingdoms and one of the last four kingdoms to survive to the present day. As the Fishermen are considered poets and philosophers, Nereus considered them to be cowards. Despite this, Ricou commands a major military force, making them vital for Orm's plans.[1]
Killed by Orm Marius[]
Orm Marius kills Ricou.
During a meeting with Orm, Nereus and Nuidis Vulko, Ricou rebuked the proposal for an alliance by stating when they finally make contact with the surface that they should educate them, not destroy them. This went poorly with Orm, who provoked him into attacking and impaled him, threatening his heir, Scales into cooperating. After the war, Aquaman dethroned Orm, who was arrested for his crimes, with one of them being for murdering the Fishermen King.[1]
Legacy[]
After his arrest and imprisonment, Orm Marius came to regret many of his actions committed during his war, including Ricou's death with him vowing to try to make amends for them once he escaped and retook the throne. After his failed attempt to leave his prison however, Orm started to believe that his suffering in prison was a necessity for helping those he had hurt, heal, including the family members of Ricou who still bore anger and grief at his actions.[2]
Personality[]
Ricou cared about his family and the Fishermen Kingdom, wanting the best for them. He also cared about peace, wanting peace for the surface world instead of entering the war. Ricou was also brave and wise, choosing to stay out of the war and protect his family and his kingdom. However, the Fishermen King's choices resulted in him getting killed by Orm Marius, threatening his family to make them join the war.

- The name "Ricou" may have been selected in honor of Ricou Browning, a stuntman and swimmer who was known for being able to hold his breath for several minutes. Browning played the titular character in the classic Universal horror film Creature from the Black Lagoon.
- Ricou is voiced by Djimon Hounsou, who also portrays The Wizard.
