The Batman is an upcoming American superhero film based on the DC Comics' character Batman. It will be directed, produced, and written by Matt Reeves.

Development of the film began in 2015 with Affleck and Johns beginning the scripting process. In late January 2017 however, Affleck had dropped out of directing duties, with Reeves doing a one-page rewrite.

It will be the tenth installment in the DC Comics Extended Universe and is scheduled for release on June 25, 2021.

When the scheduled release dates for the DC Comics Extended Universe was revealed by Warner Bros., it was also announced that a solo Batman film was in active development but without a confirmed release date.[1] In July 2015 it was announced that Ben Affleck would team up with Geoff Johns to co-write a solo Batman film that would be Directed by Affleck.[2] On June, 21st, 2016, Affleck stated that his Batman script isn't where he wants it to be and until it's in a good place with him, production won't start anytime soon. On September 8th, 2016, Geoff Johns confirmed that Deathstroke will be the villain in the film and that Joe Manganiello will portray him. [3] Manganiello revealed to Entertainment Tonight in a interview that filming will start in Spring next year.[4] On January 30, 2017, Ben Affleck stepped down from directing The Batman, while still producing, writing, and starring in it. He will no longer direct the film. [5] Deadline reported that Chris Terrio has rewritten The Batman for Ben Affleck. Matt Reeves was announced to be in talks to direct The Batman, Ridley Scott, and Fede Alvarez are also floating around on February 10, 2017. [6] On February 17, 2017, Matt Reeves and WB negotiations have broken down. The possibility, however, exists that talks could resume when heads cool. It doesn't mean that he won't direct the film. [7] [8] Matt Reeves is directing The Batman after breaking the negation with WB, he officially signed on. [9] After signing on Reeves has been writing the script for the film and is looking to make it a noir-driven detective story. [10] Reeves is hoping to release the film in 2021. [11] On January 30, 2019, It was announced and confirmed by Affleck that he would not return to star as Batman in the film and that Reeves will be looking to cast a younger actor to play batman with the intention of coming out June 25, 2021. [12] On May 16, 2019, Variety and Deadline reported that Robert Pattinson and Nicholas Hoult are the top choices for the role of Batman with Robert being the frontrunner although no deal has been set. [13] [14] [15] On May 31, 2019, Robert Pattinson was officially signed on to portray Bruce Wayne/Batman after a test screen with Pattinson and Nicholas Hoult.[16] On September 23, 2019, Jeffery Wright and Jonah Hill were announced to be in talks for Commissioner Gordon, and for Penguin or Riddler.[17] [18] On October 14, 2019, Zoe Kravitz was announced to be playing Selina Kyle/Catwoman, the shortlist went from Kravitz, Ana De Armas, Zazie Beetz, Eiza Gonzalez, and Ella Balinksa. [19] [20][21] On October 17, 2019, After talks with Hill broke down, Paul Dano was cast as Riddler.[22] Colin Farrell and Andy Serkis are in talks to play Penguin and Alfred, with Serkis cast as Alfred. [23] [24] On November 22, 2019, The Hollywood Reporter and Matt Reeves announced that John Turturro had been cast as Carmine Falcons. [25]


Reeves is looking to start production hopefully in Spring 2019. [26] Filming could start late 2019, or early 2020. [27] On January 28, 2020, The Batman started filming in London.
